June Van Vorst's father, Joe Pound, became acquainted with Carle long before his daughter met and married a Carle administrator.
In the early 1930s, Joe's 15-year-old sister fought a losing battle with cancer. Because of the compassionate care shown to his family by Carle physician and co-founder Dr. J.C. Thomas Rogers, Joe and his wife, Helen, became regular investors in Carle's future. The Pounds attended various Circle of Friends meetings. It was, in fact, at one of those meetings that June first met her husband, Charles B. Van Vorst.
The Van Vorsts recently honored the memory of June's parents with a gift to the organization that has played such an important role in their families' lives. The $100,000 will bequest "is an expression of our belief that we owe so much to those who have helped us in our lives," Chuck explains. "Carle has provided wonderful care to those we love."
Chuck became president and CEO of The Carle Foundation and Carle Foundation Hospital in 1979. He held this role until leaving in 1990. "My years at Carle were years of major transition," Chuck says, recalling how the change in Medicare reimbursements drove major changes. "We had to aggressively develop new programs and expand existing ones to meet this new reality. Over 15 new business entities were developed as a result."
While Chuck and June would like their gift to be used for leadership development, they realize that times and events change. "It's important that Carle have the ability over time to apply donated funds to those most important and pressing issues," Chuck explains. "It is best left up to Carle's leadership to apply the specifics."
